30 days of Natural Learning in Photos: Day 8

On Sunday’s, we usually go out for breakfast, the kids will draw pictures on the back of the placemats or colour the pictures provided at the restaurant.

Today we ended up learning about the basics of fractions. When Evelyn opened her napkin she noticed that it was divided into four sections and proceeded to count them. This led to the concept of fourths and adding them up to make a whole (even though the parts weren’t equal in size they were close enough to demonstrate the concept). What a great opportunity to learn some math 🙂

Later in the day, Evelyn wanted to learn how to use the Klutz crotchet kit, which she is still a bit young for, she wouldn’t let us dismiss it again but insisted that we figured it out. So we pulled out the instructions and I tried my hand at the chain stitch, apparently I am not very skilled at deciphering crotchet instructions, do dad decided he would figure it out for us. It wasn’t as easy as he thought, but he persevered and figured it out.

Another fine example of natural learning which demonstrates the fact that learning is a lifelong journey.

What a beautiful fall day in November. Sixteen degrees Celsius and clear blue skies. Definitely a day to be outside, there won’t be many more like this until spring.

Today’s journey to the park allowed for learning about: bike safety when riding on the road, Evelyn is determined to drive down the middle of the road; exercise and its physical effects – heart beats faster, we get warmer, we breathe deeper; reading the road and street signs along the way; distance travelled and our pace – my exercise app keeps us informed; tree and leaf identification; how different surfaces are easier or more difficult to ride on; and the effect of slope on your ability to ride.

Not to mention the mental health benefits that come from being outside and surrounded by nature, taking things at your own pace and just enjoying the moments. It’s especially good for mom. Being outside is good for the soul. 🙂

30 Days of Natural Learning in Photos: Day 2

We started off the day at the farmers’ market where Evelyn made the connection that we would see turnips there (not sure where she got that from) and we did. Unfortunately, no pics as she was not in a cooperative mood.

Then acro class, followed by a trip to the grocery store. Lots of natural learning always takes place there: healthy eating, food recognition, today we talked about whole grain pasta vs. white. Picture is not great, but again not overly cooperative .
